Vivino is a popular wine community, database and mobile application where users can buy, rate and review wines. Vivino’s 16 million users contribute reviews and ratings for millions of wines from around the globe, and collectively, this database makes up the largest wine library in the world. Using image recognition to identify wines, Vivino is like Shazam for wine.
Vivino’s global customer base was growing, they had to hire a VP of Product who had mobile-first experience across marketplace, SoLoMo and eCommerce. US market experience was also a prerequisite. The candidate had to be based in Copenhagen, Denmark, or willing to relocate to work alongside the founding team at the Headquarters.
The market mapping process involved resourcing Europe’s top VPPs for all the top internet companies and startups across the Marketplace, Social, eCommerce landscape. The search was later re-focused to the US market, looking for Danish/ Scandinavian product leaders across Northern America.
A long list of 20 candidates was introduced to the board before a final shortlist of eight executives were managed through a selection process.
Torben Mottes had lived in California for 16 years but relocated to take up the VP Product position. Since then the company has seen expanded success.
The number of app users has grown from 4 million to 16 million. Vivino was awarded Editor’s Choice on Android. The app has been featured multiple times in the Apple store in over 100 countries related to features Vivino has launched. Vivino has recently been focusing on building the marketplace size of the app, so users can easily find a retailer for any wine they want to buy. The database has now reached 12,000 retailers, who frequently provide updates about the products they sell.
