Joonas Kukkonen ex Spotify development lead joins leading language learning app, Busuu. Joonas will be based in Busuu’s London headquarters as the company prepares to IPO in the next few years.
At Spotify, Joonas previously led the development of Spotify’s podcast mobile experience across Android, iOS and backend. There he expanded the product area to London, recruiting two new teams, with line management responsibility for a total of 5 teams.
Speaking about recent placements, Bernhard Niesner, co-founder and CEO at Busuu, said: “Joonas [and the other placements] are experienced leaders in their respective fields, with strong track records of helping businesses scale.”
“We’re excited to welcome [them] to our leadership team, as the company enters a new phase of growth to gear up to IPO.”
At Busuu, Joonas will be heading up Busuu’s engineering teams in London and Madrid, while overseeing the development of the platform’s language teaching capabilities.
“Language learning is still in its first steps to becoming digitalised, and has only seen the first promises of what impact personalised learning can have,” said Joonas Kukkonen.
“Busuu has started on this journey by enhancing lessons through the use of machine learning technology and is in a position to change how we learn languages.”
Joonas will be based in Busuu’s London headquarters and was hired following the announcement of the acquisition of video tutoring service Verbling. In addition to opening a new office in Madrid last month, Busuu also surpassed 100 million users worldwide.
