Peakon needed a CTO to take over from the co-founder, Christian Holm. The engineering and product management functions were run out of Copenhagen. It was essential to find someone experienced to ensure buy-in from the team, someone who had scaled engineering teams to 100+ and importantly someone that fitted with the culture of the business.

Benevolent AI wanted an experienced Chief Executive Officer to take the reigns from the founder, Ken Mulvany. The brief was for a highly experienced operator from the technology sector well suited to a science orientated, deep tech business. Combined with a commercial and strategic focus, the CEO would be capable of carrying the vision and mission of the company. It was important that they understood the value of IP.
Baroness Joanna Shields remains one of the most prominent figures in the European tech sector. She brought a wealth of international experience following senior leadership roles at Google, Bebo and Facebook, where she led the European operations. Her last role was Minister for Internet Safety & Security, where she helped devise and execute the UK National Cyber Security Strategy.
Baroness Shields has made a very significant impact at Benevolent.AI. Not long into the role, she shifted strategy which saw the business pivot from no longer using machine learning just to identify new drug treatments, but to actually develop its own drugs as well. She established key partnerships with pharma giants AstraZeneca and Novartis. She closed a $90m funding round whilst having to deal with the fallout of Neil Woodford’s early involvement with the company. And at the start of 2020, she focused the team on the Coronavirus. The researchers identified a possible treatment which went into clinical trials.
“Joanna is a business builder with a strong leadership track record in growing companies with state-of-the-art, disruptive technology at their heart. Joanna’s appointment demonstrates the trajectory at which we intend to grow BenevolentAI and points to the impact that we want to make as a company in applying artificial intelligence to accelerate scientific innovation.”
